How to measure a garden from a satellite image
An aerial photo or map screenshot is a quick way to estimate a fence run, a lawn area or a patio before you get the tape measure out.
Take a screenshot
Zoom the map so your garden fills most of the screen, and make sure its scale bar is visible. Take a screenshot.
Add it to the board
Drag or paste the screenshot onto the board.
Calibrate on the scale bar
Press Calibrate and drag along the full length of the map's scale bar, then type the length it shows (for example 10 m). A known length on the ground, such as a house wall you've measured, works even better.
Measure
Use Measure for fence lines and edges. For lawn or patio areas, draw round them with Lasso fill (G) and select the fill to see the area.
How accurate is it?
- Aerial photos are often taken at an angle, and tall things such as trees and roofs lean. Measure at ground level where you can.
- Images can be several years old: check that fences and buildings haven't changed.
- Treat results as estimates for planning and quotes, and measure on site before you order materials.
Questions
Can I measure a field or plot boundary?
Yes, for an estimate. For legal boundaries, rely on the title plan and a surveyor.
Which map can I use?
Any map or satellite view with a scale bar, or a known length you can calibrate on.
